Best time. Leave at 5 AM to beat Trivandrum traffic

Best season
October to March is cool and dry. April to June is hot, and the Southwest monsoon arrives around June. Expect heavy wind from May to September. Ghat roads get slippery in rain.
Start at first light
Sunrise is the best light and the best riding: traffic is thin and the cape is at its quietest. Plan your day to be off the hill roads before dusk.
Fuel discipline
Top up in Nagercoil before heading west into the Ghats or east toward the Kerala coast. Pumps become far apart on hill roads.
Wind and waves
At Muppandal and along the west coast, crosswinds can push a loaded bike sideways. Stay relaxed, ride slower, and keep both hands firm on the bars.
Fishing villages
Village roads are narrow, with nets drying on the tarmac and people walking. Slow right down, especially in the mornings.
Temple etiquette
Many temples ask you to remove footwear and dress conservatively. Have a light shirt or shawl in the bag, and leave helmets and jackets at your stay.
Ferry queues
The Vivekananda Rock ferry gets busy from mid-morning. Go early, and keep some cash and ID handy.
Crossing into Kerala
Carry your RC, insurance and licence. Check fuel and cash before the border, and note that police checkpoints are routine.
Helmets always
Helmets are mandatory for rider and pillion in Tamil Nadu. It is also the best insurance policy on a wet Ghat road.
